RED MERANTI

About
Red Meranti is a hardwood species group native to Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It belongs to the Shorea genus and is known for its affordability, workability, and reddish-brown coloration. The wood has a straight to interlocked grain with a medium to coarse texture, making it aesthetically pleasing for a wide range of uses. While not as durable as some high-end hardwoods, Red Meranti performs well in indoor applications such as furniture, paneling, cabinetry, and plywood manufacturing. It’s also used in general construction, especially where cost-effectiveness is a priority.
Punjab Woods
Red Meranti is relatively lightweight and easy to work with using both hand and machine tools. It glues, nails, and finishes well, although the interlocked grain can lead to tear-out if not handled carefully. While untreated Red Meranti is not recommended for prolonged outdoor use, it can be pressure-treated for better resistance to weather and pests. Its balance of aesthetics and affordability makes it a popular choice in the global timber market. However, due to deforestation concerns in Southeast Asia, buyers should seek Meranti certified by responsible forestry organizations like FSC to ensure sustainable sourcing.
